What is ESTA? |
 |
ESTA
is short for Electronic System for Travel Authorization. ESTA is an online
application system for all travelers from Visa Waiver Countries. The Visa
Waiver Program has made traveling to the United States a relatively easy process for
the millions of
visitors from visa waiver countries. However, new regulations now require all visitors
traveling under the Visa Waiver Program to apply for
a Travel Authorization in addition to fulfilling specific passport and
Visa Waiver Program
requirements. The application process is online and operated by the U.S. Department of
Homeland Security (DHS).
Starting on January 12, 2009, any person entering the United States under the visa waiver program is required to be pre-approved to enter the country.

ABOUT TRAVEL AUTHORIZATION
A Travel Authorization can only be applied for by a citizen of a Visa Waiver country. Any other visitor must still apply for a B-1 Business Visa or B-2 Tourist Visa in advance. A Travel Authorization permits the U.S. visitor to travel to the United States by air or sea and ask for admission to enter. A Travel Authorization is only related to "permission to travel to the United States," and an approved Travel Authorization does not guarantee admission to the United States. Obtaining a travel authorization is necessary, however, and without it you may be denied boarding, encounter delays at the border and even face deportation if you are not allowed to enter. Applying for a Travel Authorization with false information can make you permanently ineligible to visit the United States.
You do not need to have an airline or hotel reservation to apply for a Travel
Authorization. If you are planning a trip to the United States, it is recommended to apply for your Travel Authorization today. An approved Travel Authorization is not a visa and it does not guarantee entry to the United States. However, since January 12, 2009 it is a requirement for all Visa Waiver Program travelers. Note that if you travel to the United States but are denied entry, you will never be able to enter the United States under the Visa Waiver Program again.
Who needs to apply for a Travel Authorization?
- Any traveler that intends to visit the United States under the Visa Waiver Program
- Any traveler transiting through the United States under the Visa Waiver Program
- Children and infants are also required to obtain a travel authorization (ESTA) before entering the United States
Transit Travelers Must Also Apply for ESTA:
Travelers transiting through the United States after January 12, 2009 under the Visa Waiver Program must also possess an approved
Travel Authorization (ESTA). The Travel Authorization Application Guide explains how you, the Visa Waiver
traveler, can apply for your own Travel Authorization and update it for future
visits or transits through the United States. The application guide includes detailed instructions
and a work sheet for how to complete your own Travel Authorization application.
In the case that you are not approved for a Travel Authorization, the guide also
contains instructions for how to apply for a U.S. visitor
visa (B-1 Business or B-2 Tourist visa).
